August 13, 2011 Dateline: Mackinaw City, Michigan
Yesterday, I went to St. Ignace for fuel and then across the Straits of Mackinaw to Mackinaw City. It was a short 11 mile trip. The plan was for Rich and Carol to stay in Mackinaw City and go back to Mackinac Island by ferry today. They could visit Fort Mackinac which they did not get to do on Thursday. This morning they woke to rain and stayed on me almost all day, save a trip to the local marine store.
Mackinaw City is like most summer resort towns. There is a main street which is lined with shops selling various tourist goods and of course fudges shops. Someone described the town as a northern Key West. Outside of town near the rebuilt 1700 outpost of Michilimackinac are all kinds of motels and gift shops. Michilimackinac was an early fur trading settlement that was established in the early 1700s by the French.
One of the benefits of all of the horses on Mackinac Island is the vast quantity of manure that they generate. That manure is accumulated and then used as fertilizer to feed the really pretty gardens on the island. Here is a picture of one
Rich and Carol saw this license plate bracket on a car. I guess its owner has a personal view of the government bailout of the US automobile manufacturers.
Tomorrow, I hope that, I will be going under this bridge. It is really big and long (5 miles long including approaches). It is officially known as Mackinac Bridge and connects Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with the rest of the state.
We were at St. Ignace when you were getting fuel. We were waiting for the dock to clear. We are going to Mac Island tomorrow and then Beaver Island. Maybe we will catch up to you. Our blog is mvbrowneyedgirl.blogspot.com
